How to Play War
A standard 52-card deck is shuffled and split into two face-down piles: 26 cards for you and 26 for the computer. Select Flip Card. Both players reveal their top card together, and the higher card wins both cards. Ace is high; suits do not matter. Equal ranks start a war. Keep playing until one player collects all 52 cards.
War Card Game Rules
- Rank order: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace. No jokers.
- No choosing cards: play from the top of your face-down deck.
- Collecting: won cards go to the bottom of the winner’s deck. This version shuffles each captured pile to vary the order and reduce repeating sequences.
- Equal ranks: tied cards stay in the middle while you play a war.
- Controls: use Flip Card to start a round. Ties and repeated wars resolve automatically. Auto Play continues for you; Stop Auto Play stops future flips. Switching away from the tab also stops Auto Play.
- Winning: collect the entire deck. New Game starts a fresh shuffle; leaving or reloading the page also starts over.
What Happens When There’s a Tie?
When both face-up cards have the same rank, it’s War! Each player places three cards face down and one face up. The higher new face-up card captures everything in the middle, including the original tied cards and all face-down cards. Another tie means another war, with an even bigger pile at stake.
Short-deck rule: if you have fewer than four cards left, put as many as possible face down while reserving your final card to reveal. A player with no cards left to continue loses the war. If both players run out on an equal reveal, this version shuffles and splits the tied pile equally so play can continue. War has several house rules; these are the rules used here.
Play War Against the Computer
This PuzzleTen version is a two-player game with one computer opponent. Both sides use the same deck rules, and neither chooses which card appears next. Manual play lets you take your time; Auto Play is useful for longer games. You can stop it at any point and return to flipping yourself.
War Card Game FAQ
How do you play the War card game?
Split a shuffled deck evenly, then reveal one card each. The higher rank takes the cards. Equal ranks trigger a war; collect the whole deck to win.
How many cards do you start with in War?
Each of the two players starts with 26 cards from a standard 52-card deck. Keep your pile face down.
What happens when you tie in War?
Each player adds three cards face down and one face up. Compare the face-up cards; the winner takes the entire pile. Repeat if they tie again. Short decks follow the rule explained above.
Is Ace high in War?
Yes. Ace beats King and every lower rank. Two aces cause a war.
Does suit matter in War?
No. Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades have equal value. Only rank determines who wins a reveal.
Can you play War with two players?
Yes. Classic War is a two-player card game. Here, you play against the computer rather than another person online.
Is War a game of luck or strategy?
Classic War is a game of luck. Cards are played from the top of the deck, so there is no strategic card selection. Clicking faster does not improve your chances.
Can I play War online for free?
Yes. This browser game is free and requires no account or download. It works with touch, mouse, or keyboard.
How long does a game of War take?
Length varies widely because cards can pass back and forth many times. There is no fixed number of rounds or guaranteed finish time. Use Auto Play for a longer game, or start a fresh deal whenever you like.
